Camera and CGI/VFX Colour Science

New cameras – and new “colour science” firmware packagesfor existing cameras – are being released every month. New workflows are being introduced, and new demands arise for integration of CGI/VFX.

For this event we assume that attendees have a very good grasp of colour science for digital cinema and HD/UHD. Charles will present an advanced-level course on camera colour processing. He will also present the colour science that underlies the relationship between still and motion camera characteristics and CGI/VFX.

Topics include:

• Light levels in the scene and at the camera (LV, EV, EI, “nits”)
• The overall acquisition/post/mastering pipeline (OETF/OETF⁻¹/SR/DR/EOTF⁻¹/EOTF)
• The definition and use of scene-referred image data
• The conceptual bases of BT.709 and BT.1886
• ACES at acquisition; ACES IDT; ACESproxy
• Colourspaces at acquisition
• Theory and practice of log and quasilog codes and their relation to sensor noise
• Colour in OpenEXR, OpenColorIO
• Colour issues with stock & reference footage; textures; digital matte painting
• Colour in CGI; RGB and spectral rendering
• Colour transforms by math or LUT; interpolation issues
