Description

Digital technology is now the preferred alternative to film for the capture, post-production, and exhibition of motion pictures. Solid standards are in place for the distribution of digital cinema; however, acquisition does not yet have a set of mature standards. The “digital intermediate” represents the entirety of a movie in post-production as a set of digital files; the DI process also lacks a set of solid standards. CGI and VFX techniques have their roots in computer graphics, and computer graphics has its own set of conventions for dealing with colour imagery. Part of the appeal of digital acquisition, the DI process, and CG techniques is their flexibility. Taking advantage of that flexibility – or even dealing with it – requires knowledge.

In this 2-day Seminar, organized by BKSTS, Charles Poynton will introduce digital cinema acquisition, post-production, and exhibition equipment and techniques. He will detail the image and colour science that underlies image acquisition and reproduction in digital cinema. He will explain how colour is captured in digital cinema and HDTV cameras, and how image data is encoded for presentation to the digital intermediate (DI) process. He will discuss practical details of maintaining colour quality through the imaging pipeline, paying particular attention to the digital intermediate. Participants will gain an understanding of the factors that need to be addressed to achieve high quality, and learn practical techniques that can be used to successfully implement digital cinema.
