Emerging technology and standards for studio reference displays

Presenter: Charles Poynton
Duration: 2 hours

Synopsis:

CRT displays are now virtually obsolete as reference displays for studio use: CRT reference displays can essentially no longer be purchased. CRT displays are also obsolete in the consumer domain. Various display technologies are emerging, but it is clear for the foreseeable future – five to ten years at least – that LCDs will be the dominant technology to replace CRTs in both applications. In my view, CRTs have never been adequately standardized in the broadcast domain, and viewing conditions, while a necessary aspect of reference viewing, have never been adequately standardized either. Furthermore, existing standards such as BT.709 and SMPTE 274M are unclear and misleading about transfer functions (“gamma”), and completely discount picture rendering, which is understood within the colour management community to be vital to image reproduction.

In this talk, I will describe the technical implications of existing practice, and introduce the concept of picture rendering (which video engineers have been doing unknowingly for the last 30 years). I will review the technology of emergent displays (such as the Sony BVM-L230), and present the challenges that such displays face to standardization in the professional domain. Finally, I will provide an update on industry standardization activities at ITU-R, SMPTE, and EBU.
