Poynton's homeCheckerboard rant

The original 128 KB Mac has a 512 x 342 pixel screen, 1 bit deep. It displayed a checkerboard pattern of alternating one and zero bits, to obtain an approximation of gray.

Nowadays, displays of eight or even 24 bits per pixel are commonplace. The default desktop pattern is no longer a pattern or alternating black and white pixels, but now alternates 102 and 170.

Why?

The alternation increases the susceptibility of the display to Moiré artifacts.
